Evolution is Bitchin!

So I'm taking a course called "The Evolution of Life" here at college. It's not for a gen ed or my major, just for funsies - it was pretty much the closest thing to "let's talk about dinosaurs and stuff 101" at my college. It's a wonderful class, too - it's got all the cool parts of science and none of the boring crap (i.e. no math), and I've learned quite a bit in it.

I say this because this class is probably going to affect my art a lot in the next few months. Remember how I was on a big alien kick when I was taking that Sci Fi class? Coincodence?

It's already given me one really, really, REALLY good bit of knowledge. Apparently oxygen respiration isn't the only kind of respiration used by organic creatures. Many bacteria use different elements, including - get this - sulfur. Now, so far there's nothing that says the other organisms - such as the sulfur respirating bacteria - can't evolve into big, complex creatures like plants and animals. The reason oxygen respiration won out is the fact that oxygen produces a lot more energy than other elements because its so reactive. Given time and lack of competition, the other organisms - such as the sulfur respirating bacteria - could evolve their own animals and such.

I found this really interesting because, as you may or may not know, Venus has a very sulfur rich atmosphere, and I've been trying to figure out how a creature could naturally evolve there. A certain Voracious Venusian in my gallery is very, very interested in this new development.

I'll try to add something this weekend. Thanks for listening!

Man, I wish my classes were that fun. Though my science teacher DID teach me what it means to call on Ralph, Harold and Hershel. XP
XD The teacher is excellent, too. On the first day of class he gave a lecture about how to tell the difference between science and "Bronze Age Fair Tales" (i.e. creationism).

Ah, yes, I remeber reading a book with something similar. I think it was called the Heart of th Serpent, and in it a group of Earth explorers met a group of explorers from a fluorine-based planet. The fluorine-people were kind of depressed since they had never met another being like them, in all their wanderings, fluorine being such a comparatively rare element.

Isn't life amazing?

Some say that I'm a wise man-
Others say that I'm a fool.
It doesnt' matter either way;
I'll always be a wise man's fool.

Possibly. Possibly.

Beware the Terror of Tyrantis!
Reminds me of my physics class, it's almost more like a philosophy study than science.

No, no! I applaud you.

I ask questions, lots of really stupid questions.
I so envy you. Well, OK, I'm taking a Biology class, but it's more generic; right now we're studying cell structure (you know, stuff like the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, yadda yadda yadda).
