Tyrantis and Lerna by TyrantisTerror Tyrantis and Lerna by TyrantisTerror
For my 800th deviation, please accept this picture of Tyrantis and Dr. Lerna - together in art for the first time!

To make it extra special, I did my best to give Tyrantis some TEXTURE.  Maybe now people will stop drawing him completely smooth like a baby's bottom or a skittle.  Dude's scaly!  And no, I probably won't be doing something like this again any time soon.  This was mind numbingly tedious work, and I prefer my artwork to have that cartoony look.

Do you use a wacom for your art?

Not for anything in my deviantart gallery, no.  All the lineart was done with pen, while the coloring was done with a mouse.  I only recently got a tablet and have been practicing with it on my newer art site.

But I like baby-bottom smooth Tyrantis! It makes him all the more squeezable cute! ;p

Well, you'll be seeing more of him!  In that I don't plan on doing this much texture work for the forseeable future.

Really came out fantastic, this did.  The scale detail is always a pain in the ass, but it sure does pay off in the end.  Looks damn nice, TT.

Now I'm imagining Tyrantis as a Skittle, and the image is hilarious. XD

May need to make a rough doodle of such, if I have the energy.

I never thought that the Big T was simple or smooth. It's just that most pictures are very pulled out and slowly bringing out little scale designs would be hard to impossible at the scale being used. However, it is flat out gorgeous to see how elegant Tyrantis is when you get up close to the ol' bastard.

Oh, I'm not claiming everyone thinks that.  However, on the rare occasions where more detail oriented artists have drawn Tyrantis, all but one have chosen to keep him looking completely smooth in what I can only imagine is an homage to my own style. So I decided to try my hand at texturing so future artists can know what he should look like when drawn by someone who doesn't just make cute cartoons.

These scales are so mesmerizing. It makes me wish Tyrantis was real so I could just pet him all day.

How long did the scales take you anyway?

Thanks!

At least an hour to draw them (probably more, but I didn't time it) and some more time fiddling in photoshop to get them to look right.

Very nicely done.

The trick with scales is less is more. Maybe a few here and there.

I guess it took Tyrantis all this time to do so lol. Still love him though lol. Perhaps now we will see a new era of scaled Tyrantises!

Drawing individual scales is both dreadfully tedious and unnecessary. You can go a long ways with minimal and implied texture. That said, it is kinda neat to see what a hyper-detailed Tyrantis would look like. Pretty much identical to what I imagined, save for the big scale cheeks. Which are kind of adorable.

Tyrantis's heavily armored cheeks are adorable.

It was kinda fun adding just a little variety to the scales.  Not so much so that I'd want to do it ever again, but still.  Yeah.

Hey it's me and i send you a letter and replied to you but you didn't respond and I wanted to say thatwhen first ask you about making a kaiju similar to yours i wasn't thinking and i should have said that would it be okay if i make a dinosaur kaiju inspired by your's, also i'm not going to copy off you, i'm i got you mad and plus i didn't even come up with a desigh for him and he is going to start out as a regular T-Rex but then later he'll become a kaiju.
