Artist's Comments

Huge scrapbook dump today. I'm still struggling to get the energy to do a full fledged deviation, so enjoy these sketches while you wait for the goods!

A long while ago someone made a comment about one of my concept art pieces for Tyrantis, asking if that was the "Showa Tyrantis." I'm still not entirely sure what he or she meant, but it got me to thinking. Tyrantis is very much a Showa monster. I did that on purpose, since the Showa period was my favorite of the Godzilla film series and, in my own personal opinion, the best. Tyrantis is meant to be an homage to the old school, 50's and 60's giant monster movies, and the Showa Godzilla series had some of the best examples of those movies.

So yes, the Tyrantis that has become my main character is very much a Showa monster. But the other thing that comment made me think about is what he would look like if he wasn't a Showa kaiju.

So I sketched a Heisei Tyrantis, Shinsei Tyrantis, and an old school stop motion Willis O'brien Tyrantis (based on my Battle of the Behemoths alternate universe version of the character). I have no plans to use any of these designs. They're just here for funsies.

The final bit of this scrap is a sketch of a Tyrantis plush doll pattern. It's basically the skin of my current Tyrantis stop motion model (the "Showa" version, if you will) without the skeleton. I may finalize this pattern and make a nice plush Tyrantis for myself some day... and maybe possibly sell them here as a print. ;P

Tyrantis 2000 is badass. I'd love to see a non-scrap version of him. Nice perspective on Heisei Tyrantis in the one below the O'Brien version.
I'll probably get around to drawing Ty2K eventually, along with the others. Heisei Tyrantis is oddly fun to draw, what with his thunder thighs and tiny widdle arms.

I really like these sketches. Especially the two Heisei perspectives, though I could do without the Heisei thunder thighs.

yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift - that is why we call it the present
You recall in your response to my idea changing Tyrantis's powers you said, "I've occasionally thought of doing an alternate universe story involving several different versions of Tyrantis that came from different timelines, so I'd like to see what you do with the character."? These could be those alternate universe versions of Tyrantis. What do you think?

Jesus is my Lord and Savior and I am not afraid to say it:pray:

According to the Obama administration considers me to be a potential terrorist. Why? Because I am a conservative Catholic. Spread the word.
This was kinda what I was talking about. It'd an idea, I just have to see if I can craft a good story out of it.

O'Brien Tyrantis- come to think of it, this one could also be the Tyrantis-equivalent of Godzilla '54...or at least the pre-heroic Showa version. I like the old-school kangaroo tripod pose, long arms, smooth snout/nape of neck & grim reptilian visage (especially the Charles Knight-esque brow ridges).

Heisei- y'know, this one really drives home what a poor, malproportioned SOB the Heisei Godzilla was, despite the design's various neat features. Tiny head, stumpy arms, great honking cheese-log legs. Oddly enough, the next two perspectives don't look nearly as awkward as the main profile sketch...it's all in the thunder thighs (and those elephantine feet). I imagine this guy could build up some serious momentum...it's accelerating, cornering and stopping that might give him problems.

T2K- stylized spiny slickness...I especially dig the exaggerated arm-spurs and intricate cranial hornlets. Heck, I wouldn't mind if this guy ended up as the adult version of Ty Jr.

Great work here, and sorry I didn't check the scrappage earlier.
Heisei Tyrantis is a fatty. Needs to lay of the skyscrapers for a while, I'd say.
XD Lol, yes. He needs some good physical activity to get rid of those thunder thighs.
