Kaiju Creator Tutorial Thingy by TyrantisTerror Kaiju Creator Tutorial Thingy by TyrantisTerror
I had the idea for this while clutching my aching forehead in agony during my bout with the flu. Fun!

These are what I consider some of the fundamental things to consider when designing a giant monster. Having designed a few pretty decent looking monsters myself (I don't want to brag), I felt it could be a useful tool.

This is not a tutorial on how to DRAW. You can get those from far, far superior artists than myself all over on this site. This is just a few tips on basic elements of design - elements that should be considered regardless of the artist's skill level. So enjoy.

Anyone who disagrees with me on my tips can ignore this with my blessing. Or tell me to fuck off. Really, I don't care either way. But if this helps you at all, please tell me so. My ego loves a good stroking.

I find that bit with Armorblob funny as hell. He should be an actual character, if only to be the butt of jokes about how forgettable he is.

The only problem I have with that is that it'd require me to draw him more than once.

Well how ugly it is, is what makes it funny, but I can sympathize.

I draw them by hand.  I color them in Adobe Photoshop Elements.

You draw them by hand?  You don't give yourself enough credit :) That's a hell of a lot better than anything I could draw by hand!

I likes. One question: What if one part of your monster is an armablob and the other is a blandosaurus?

I simply love this tutorial.
You have explained very well the archetypes and how to create an original kaiju.
I know this is a bit old but you should submit it to the kaiju focused groups at DA!

I like the idea of a diagonal body style. It seems like whatever beastie is built that way can switch from 2 legs to 4 when they need to.

This is an interesting tutorial, but I have a long winded question: I'm trying to create a unique dragon design, one with a diagonal shape. Thing is, I want to make it more chicken-like, so instead of a tail, its got an insect-like abdomen. So, would a tail really be necessary for it?

Hmm, I'd have to see a sketch to be sure. I think tails are sort of a necesarry feature for dragons, but the chicken/insectoid abdomen end could work as sort of a vestigial tail. It's all about how you exectute the design I guess.

If it doesn't work, you could make the tail really small, like the tails of certain lizards (the misnamed "horned toad" comes to mind).

I always felt like the tail was too distracting. From what I know, a big tail on a reptilian creature is used for either swimming (crocodiles), or balance (like a therapod dinosaur).

:icontyrantisterror:
TyrantisTerror Featured By Owner May 10, 2010
For lizards they're also used as a primary weapon (against predators or each other), a distraction for predators (i.e. lizards let predators bite off their tails so they can escape while the predator's eating), storing fat, or, in the case of chameleons, as a prehensile limb to grab onto tree branches. For a flying creature, like many dragons, they could be used for steering. The tail is essential to most dragon designs because dragons, at the root of their myths, are based on big snakes and, to a lesser extent, big lizards.

A tail-less dragon design could work, though. Again, just depends on the exectuion.

execution, huh? I guess that's what I must work on. It seems to be melding into a mix between traditional elements with some ones that are more unusual (horses, bears, and/or insects). This'll be fun...
