Godzilla and Friends by TyrantisTerror Godzilla and Friends by TyrantisTerror
DOWNLOAD FOR FULLVIEW! There's a lot of details packed into this one.

I'm on Spring Break at the moment, and I wanted to get some artwork done. Any artwork, really. Trouble is, the four lit classes I'm in right now have pretty much drained my creative juices with numerous essays. Do you know what that means?

FANART!

Yes, fanart. Hones the skills with minimum creative requirements. I've also had a Godzilla drawing itch for a while now, so... so yeah.

I pretty much chose my favorite monsters from the series. I used some of my Sci-Fi revoltech action figures (which I've scrimped and saved for and oh my god they are so worth it, you guys, so freaking worth the money) as references, particularly for Mothra and Rodan (since I've never really been satisfied with my ability to draw those two).

Go go Godzilla.

Bandai, which has never made a good Godzilla action figure, apparently wants to be the only game in town when it comes to Godzilla figures, so they're not letting Kaiyodo make a Revoltech Godzilla figure.

I know! It angers the hell out of me.

They are making their own super posable Godzilla figure line though, but it's not in scale with the revoltechs. They're also starting with a bunch of Heisei designs, which aren't exactly my favorite. Curse you Bandai! Curse you and your super posable line of Godzilla figures that I'll probably end up buying!

I think they're somewhere in the 5 - 6 tall range, as opposed to Sci-Fi Revoltech's 3 - 4 inches.

You know, that actually makes sense in a way, because it makes Godzilla seem much bigger than his opponents.

Depends upon the opponent. It works well when comparing, say, the Bandai Posable Godzilla to the Sci-Fi Revoltech Baragon, since Baragon should be smaller than Godzilla. However, other characters like Anguirus, Rodan, and Gigan should be roughly Godzilla's size - at least in my opinion.

That said, if they make a big King Ghidorah I'll quit my naysaying and thank them profusely. Ghidorah should definitely tower over Godzilla and his fellow kaiju.

At least make Ghidorah 9 or 10 inches, right? However, when it comes to Baragon, considering the scale of the accoessories, he seems more like the type to fight the Revoltech Tyrannosaurus, more or less.

*While we're on Anguirus, I just noticed the teeny-tiny limb-spines & that tail-tip spike...fine details both.

*Just so we're clear, the 'boot-guard' thing is hardly a deal-breaker....hell, most modern ground birds sport uniformly-textured/colored feet & lower legs, so you're likely on to something. Moving north a bit, I confess that in your shoes, I'd be sorely tempted to "update" Goro's foreclaws a bit. He's certainly more of a specialized chomper/kickboxer than Goji or Titanosaurus, but some recurved Allosaurus-style meathooks on the first & second digits might help discourage clinch-grapplers like Kong or the Gargantuas.

*Returning to Mothra...I confess to a certain odd partiality to the "Rebirth" version's elliptical wings with their oversized frontal pair, antennae & streamlined body, if not the overall fuzziness or wacky hues (although some of the Plot-Device Shapeshifts(C) are equally interesting). Truly random thought: how would Mothra look in pure Rorschach-pattern black & white, save for those spooky compound baby blues? Hrm...

I think bigger claws could definitely work on Goro. While his legs are his predominate weapon, the arms on his suit aren't exactly puny, so making them weapons isn't far fetched.

Mothra's very versatile, color wise. I used to favor her heisei color scheme, but I've grown more fond of her Showa earth tones as time goes by. Playing with her color and proportions sounds like a fun side project, though. Maybe she changes with each rebirth, like a giant insectoid Doctor Who.

Yeah, Heisei Mothra's wing-scheme is actually rather slick...it's the fuzzy Snuggles(TM)/candy-cane thorax & head that had me raising an eyebrow. The rebirth-alteration angle just plain works, especially as new forms can be introduced without seeming quite so contrived as Mothra Leo's. I do have one suggestion for close-quarters combat (or breaking clear of same): Taser-Sting(R).

Damn with a capital D, Ty-between these and your updates on Fearsome Future's rouges gallery, there's no shortage of stylistic evolution (for the better, of course). I'll get back to these shortly, but a few bullet-points seem in order:

*Loving those Indian rhino-esque rolls o' dermal "armor" adorning Anguirus' limbs, not to mention the neck-guard scutes...though speaking of which, those side-scutes on the first third of his tail seem to cut off at an odd point.

*As far as I'm concerned, the only halfway-necessary tweak for this otherwise-slick Godzilla involves a bit of texture application to the dorsals...perhaps some Heisei/Showa-style circular pitting, or vertical creases? Thump me if that makes no sense.

*From the distinctive muzzle & Grumpy Brow(C) to the wattle to the lovingly retrosauriffic build, Goro's equally finely-rendered...all I might suggest here involves recoloring the lower legs with the main body's shade, thus averting a sort of dino-in-boots effect. Again, I'm likely reaching here.

*Rodan....classically fearsome. Nothing valid to add.

*Chalk me up as a convert to the Extra Arms for Megalon(TM) fund...said appendages are more/less perfectly proportioned to boot-big enough to grapple with, but not so much to overbalance Megsy.

*Mothra? I'd expand her wingspan to roughly match Ghidorah's, but that's about it.

*Gigan? Spiffy armor.

*Ghidorah? Satanic golden perfection. We seem to have parallel trains of thought regarding red/gold Evil Eyes(TM).

Thanks! I'm glad there's noticeable improvement. Tis my aim.

I considered extending the side scutes on Anguirus's tail, as it would look suitably cool. The suit I was referencing (or rather, the extremely awesome toy based on the suit I was referencing) had those scutes end there, though, and I wanted to see if it'd work in my drawing too. I'm on the fence about it, and if/when I draw him again I may experiment with having them lead up to his tail tip.

I fully agree with texturing Godzilla's plates, as they look far flatter than I'd like in this drawing. I tried a few experiments to make them seem more three dimensional, but none were to my liking (and this was more of a "for fun" thing than a true final project - hence the lack of shading). It's definitely a problem I want to solve later.

I sort of like Goro's boot look, but I can see why some are against it. I probably wouldn't do it again, or else tone it down significantly.

Getting Mothra's wings the right size was hard. I can definitely see making them bigger, but to do so would have required me to make her body smaller so they'd fit on the paper (and would thus make her body lack detail). Another problem to tackle when I draw her next.

Beast Wars, of all shows, convinced me on how to arrange yellow and red eyes. I used to use red as an iris and yellow as the "white" of the eye until I noticed just how profoundly creepy and sinister the inverse approach looked on the CGI model for Beast Wars Megatron's T.rex mode. It looks so much more hellish and disturbing.

I absolutely adore how you integrated your style into Toho's kaiju! Especially Gigan, I'm surprised I did not find this sooner! Me and my poor sense of updating at deviantwatches...

So in all honesty, which kaiju, besides Godzilla himself, is your personal favorite? Mine's Anguirus, despite being the generic spiky anklyosaur-creature.

Thank you! It was fun. Anguirus has always been my second favorite Toho monster. There's so much personality crammed into him (particularly his face - Tsuburaya was a genius), and his design is utterly unique while at the same time seeming to be rather simple.

Man, these are great. Anguirus and Rodan are tied for my favorites of the bunch. And honestly, despite looking easily simple, those two monsters in particular are hard to nail down correctly, so the fac that you've made them awesome looking here (not that they aren't already awesome to begin with) just makes me want to bow down before you.

And all those spikes... My hand's cramping just thinking about it.

Thanks! Almost all of Godzilla's friends and foes are deceptively hard to draw. They look simple, but the masterful amount of detail packed into that simplicity is hard to capture. Tsuburaya was a genius. A mad genius.

Well, these are some of the best, Showa-inspired designs I have ever seen. They take the characters' features and play them up. They're detailed and believable, but very much the original characters. I especially love the Rodan. The texturing an anatomy are just... perfect.

I'm in the minority, but I don't much care for the Megalon though. >_> Everyone draws him as a normal beetle propped up on its hind legs, when he was more of a humanoid beetle-warrior.

Still, I love how much attention went into each one, and how well everyone's defining features are brought out. Rodan's Final Wars style tail invokes samurai armor, which is a sortof subtle nod to one of his fandom nicknames. It works surprisingly well.

Thanks! To be honest, I expected Megalon to get a lot less approval. I like how bulky he looks and how well the four arms came out, but I can definitely see what you mean about him looking too much like an upturned beetle and not enough like a beetle warrior. Something to play with in the future I guess.
